Brazilian City Declares Emergency Over Dengue Fever
Municipal authorities in Campo Grande, the capital of the southwestern Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul, on Monday declared a health emergency due to a serious outbreak of dengue fever.
The decree, signed by Mayor Alcides Bernal, says that the city needs to take "urgent" measures to control the epidemic.
Of the 9,320 cases verified during the first weeks of January, 600 have come in the last three days, according to figures compiled by the municipal health department
In the state of Parana, which borders on Mato Grosso do Sul, five municipalities have declared an emergency with 1,269 confirmed dengue cases.
Bernal, in remarks to the state-r {keyword} un Agencia Brasil news service, said that "the numbers show that this epidemic is the largest" ever experienced in Campo Grande, a city of about 786,000 people.
The emergency decree allows the hiring of doctors without the {keyword} need for bidding and it also faci {keyword}litates the procedures for buying medical equipment, among other things.
Simultaneously, authorities have increased the hours of operation for mobile clinics.
The mayor added that city hall intends to increase the number of vehicles used to fumigate for the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits the disease.

Dearborn resident and longtime vocal Lance Armstrong critic Betsy Andreu has turned her attention to another part of the disgraced cyclist's life: former fiancee Sheryl Crow.Crow, the famous singer, told "Entertainment Tonight" on Tuesday that "itÂs got to be real hard walking around knowing youÂre not telling the truth about something."Andreu that it's "unthinkable" that Crow didn't know about Armstrong's doping and the resulting cover-up that targeted people such as Andreu, the wife of one of his former teammates."I am appalled and ashamed at how weak women were in this whole saga," Andreu said. "It is an embarrassment. She could have helped other people."Among the other women Andreu cited were three in the hospital room with her in 1996 when she heard Armstrong admit to using performance-enhancing drugs: Paige Carmichael, wife of cyclist Chris, Stephanie McIlvain, a representative of ArmstrongÂs then-sponsor Oakley, and Lisa Shiels, ArmstrongÂs girlfriend. None of them corroborated Andreu's story when .Reports also have said that Armstrong's ex-wife, Kristin, was involved in the distribution of performance-enhancing drugs to other cyclists. "IÂm more angry with the people who let Lance get away with it, who aided and abetted him," Andreu said, "than I am with Lance himself."
